A case study in subversion of democracy

The BJP governance particularly this stint from 2014 onwards is a great case-study on the means and methods of subverting democracy. The rot existed before but never so rampant.

When we all know that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, the locks and checks to keep the machinery work smoothly benefiting the populace, need to be vibrant and function efficiently. Clearly the constitution has ample loop holes and so does our legal system which are all getting exposed now by this government. Their actions remain barely legal to perpetrate their authoritarian governance. And where the loop holes aren’t there, the government has the authority to reinvent the rules. More bills and amendments have been introduced to facilitate nonsensical and questionable actions that are against the constitution. No one corrupt person can do the damage singlehandedly but corruption across the system particularly at the key leadership levels and coalescence of these corrupt figures builds an edifice of diabolic power. The bureaucracy, free press and judiciary - the pillars upholding the constitution and also its built-in checks, have all been dismantled systematically. The despotic wolf is hiding in the sheep skin of democracy making a mockery of it.

Democracy in its present form is ailing and needs a revamping and perhaps few well meaning civic bodies are taking notice and racking their brains so that when this ends, how ever it ends, and when its time for a fresh beginning, we are ready.

So that a future perversion of democracy like this or simply put, the rule of the people is more difficult.
